Vic: EOC backs sexist billboard recommendations

The Equal Opportunity Commission has welcomed a Victorian government report that couldlead to action against sexist outdoor advertising.

The recommendation to allow sex discrimination action against controversial billboardsis in a report for Women's Affairs Minister MARY DELAHUNTY.

Women's groups have been outraged in recent years by posters by big brand names thatshow women in provocative poses.

EOC Victoria chief executive DIANE SISELY says the existing Equal Opportunity Act leavesthe commission powerless to take action against sexist outdoor advertising.

Dr SISLEY says there's been a 700 per cent jump in the number of sexual harassmentcomplaints lodged with the EOC in the last 10 years -- largely because men just don'tunderstand sexual harrassment.
