NSW: Burwood and Strathfield to have July elections

Two local councils in New South Wales will go to polls in July following a breakdown
in merger talks.

Local government minister HARRY WOODS says he has revoked the deferral order for elections
for Burwood and Strathfield councils in western Sydney following Strathfield's withdrawal
from an amalgamation process that began last year.

Mr WOODS says the two councils spent considerable time and resources working on a merger
proposal which was put to a rigorous independent inquiry.

He says ratepayers would be disappointed that Strathfield Council made the decision
with no consideration of the inquiry report.

The individual elections would be held on July 15.
